In what’s described as a “Millennial-Friendly” development, the Staten Island Urby block is offering 571 apartments and 35,000 square feet of commercial space. Unusually for a building overlooking the Statue of Liberty, the block has an urban farm.
The farm space is nestled in a courtyard overlooking the Statue of Liberty and it will supply crops to residents and wholesale markets. Urby also hoped by running workshops and encouraging residents to interact with the on-site farmers, it will reconnect city dwellers with agriculture.
The developers don’t expect this to be a quirky one-off either. They’re hoping to create more of these mixed use blocks elsewhere in the US.
